Mother's Day is a universal celebration honouring mothers and motherhood, yet how it is observed can vary significantly from one country to another.

Thailand

In Thailand, Mother's Day is celebrated on August 12 on the birthday of Queen Sirikit, who is regarded as the mother of the nation. The day is marked with fireworks and candle-lighting ceremonies. Jasmine flowers are popular gifts.

Mexico

In Mexico, Mother's Day, or "Día de las Madres," is celebrated on May 10, before the rest of the world. It begins with children serenading their mothers with songs. Throughout the day, mothers are treated to a festive meal, usually tamales and atole, prepared by the family.

France

French Mother's Day, "Fête des Mères," occurs on the last Sunday in May. This year it is on May 26. The French tradition of Mother's Day as per sacreblue.org started with a political campaign to increase population growth and emphasised mothers having mothered many children.

Japan

In Japan, Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. Mother's Day in Japan is symbolically associated with the egg, so children often whip up an egg-based Japanese dish giving mothers red carnations or roses and performing household chores for them.

United Kingdom

In the UK, Mothering Sunday is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This year it was celebrated on March 10. It is a day when mothers are traditionally given simnel cake, a very rich fruit cake and bouquets of spring flowers.

Serbia

In Serbia, Mother’s Day takes place in December and is part of a series of family holidays starting with Children's Day and including Father's Day. Children sneakily tie their mother’s feet up with ribbon or string and will only release her when she provides them with treats and small gifts.
